Problem

Finding a reliable handyman is often fragmented and stressful. Users rely on word of mouth, scattered directories, and inconsistent reviews, then still face uncertainty around service quality, pricing, scheduling, and trust.

HandyHub was framed around one core challenge: how might we make it easier for people to confidently hire skilled handymen while feeling safe, informed, and in control?

Research Insights

Research showed that users cared most about reliability, transparent pricing, reviews, and availability. Safety was also a major concern, especially when inviting a service provider into a private home.

  • 70% prioritized positive customer reviews.
  • 65% prioritized reliability when choosing a handyman.
  • 60% wanted transparent pricing before booking.
  • Safety, availability, and communication gaps were recurring concerns.

Users

The design considered three key user groups: busy working professionals with little time for home repairs, single parents who need trustworthy help, and retirees who may need specialized assistance for complex tasks.

These personas reinforced the need for verified profiles, clear service details, booking flexibility, and simple communication before and after a job.

Strategy

Competitive analysis across Wrkman, WeSabi, and FixItNow revealed opportunities for HandyHub to stand out with stronger verification, richer handyman profiles, transparent pricing, ratings, and a mobile-first booking flow.

The MVP focused on registration, handyman listings, profile comparison, booking and scheduling, notifications, rating and feedback, and secure payment.

Visual Design

The visual direction uses orange, blue, and light grey to balance energy, trust, and clarity. DM Sans was selected to keep the interface professional but approachable. The logo combines a mobile phone, gear, and spanner to communicate app-based access to practical handyman expertise.

Final Screens

The final UI brings the core journey together: discovering nearby professionals, reviewing verified profiles, scheduling work, tracking progress, paying securely, and rating the service after completion.

Usability Study

A usability study with 8 participants tested navigation, search, appointment scheduling, and communication. Participants completed realistic tasks such as finding a plumber, tracking an ongoing repair, leaving a review, and updating profile details.

The study validated the value of clear profiles and intuitive navigation, while surfacing opportunities to improve filtering, simplify scheduling, and make communication more streamlined.

Outcome

HandyHub became a complete UX case study for a mobile service marketplace, moving from problem definition and research to personas, competitive analysis, MVP scoping, wireframes, visual design, prototype, and usability testing.

The main takeaway was the value of designing around trust. Verified profiles, transparent pricing, visible ratings, and clear scheduling are not just features; they are the foundation for confidence in a home-services product.
